Italy Day Five – Cats and too much food

Today we went to the Largo di Torre Argentica which is an ancient Roman space in the middle of the city. More importantly, however, is that it is famous for its cat sanctuary.

It was an absolute delight to find other cat-crazed people on their feline tour, soaking up the attention given out by the 130 or so cats which are under the care of the sanctuary.

Trap, Neuter, Release

The sanctuary is a private organisation, completely funded by donations. To keep the kitties safe, it utilises the trap, neuter, release methodology for most of the cats. For those disabled, sick or elderly cats, the sanctuary is their home.

We fell in love with dozens of these cats whose lives must have been very different to those of Dexter or Cino. Still, these cats were extremely affectionate.

Too Much Pizza

After we got our cat fix for the day, we walked over to a pizzeria restaurant nearby our hotel. Chris ordered the Casareccia and Chantal the Primavera pizzas. They were enormous and filling.

The Casareccia was a mushroom and sausage pizza while the Primavera pizza was more of a foccacia with rocket, cherry tomatoes, artichoke, olives and buffalo mozzarella. Chantal describes it as a pizza salad.

Unfortunately, we ate so much we didn’t have room at dinner time for food.

Instead, we decided to rest as tomorrow at the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine will be a very big day!
